A Butterfly Careless
From Frogpond XXVI:1, The Haiku Society of America: “One of the most beautiful haiku books produced in the United States in quite a long time, this volume features the ink monotypes of Dudley Zopp reproduced on high quality paper, a letterpress cover and a one-of-a-kind slipcase with an original monotype on each. It is a book collector’s book, and those who are so inclined will be happy to have this volume as a testament to those arts as manifested in the haiku world.”
A Butterfly Careless was a collaboration with the poet and playwright Andrew Gay. Andy’s western-style haiku and my monotype collages call to mind events and images from the natural world, and are arranged in a sequence that follows the seasons and times of day.

Each copy of the book is enclosed in a slipcase covered in Arrestox cloth and stamped in foil with an original monotype laid into a debossed panel. Within the book, the poems are typeset in Dante and printed letterpress on Mohawk Ultrafelt Text. Images from the original monotypes are printed as offset duotones on Mohawk Superfine Text. Design and typography are by Paul Hoffman. A Butterfly Careless was printed letterpress at Stinehour Press (Lunenburg, Vermont, 2001).
A Butterfly Careless is held in Special Collections and Archives at Bowdoin College and at the University of Kentucky’s Margaret I. King Library, among others. A limited number of copies remain available.
